Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance

Life after Y11 can be confusing and daunting… Help is still available.

At Holgate Meadows we are committed to providing our students with personalised and independent advice and guidance, to prepare for life beyond the school gates.

We want to empower our students to plan and manage their own future, no matter what stage of career development they are currently at.

We will support them by responding to their needs and interests, by opening doors to experiences and opportunities that help them to progress  and showing them that there are many opportunities and pathways for everyone to achieve success.

All staff contribute to CEIAG provision as form tutors, pastoral leaders and subject teachers. Specialist sessions are delivered by teachers and support staff with CEIAG responsibilities. The CEIAG programme is planned, monitored and evaluated by the Careers Leader in consultation with Sheffield Futures and the Job Centre Plus.

Meet the Team…

Qamar Nawaz and Anna Winfield: Careers Advisers

Fully qualified and experienced Careers Adviser who work with students in Y9, Y10 and Y11 in HPHM Schools.

Both advisers are members of the SEND Team at Sheffield Futures.  As such, they will attend all the annual reviews for young people at HPHM School in years 9-11 who have Education, Health and Care plans. Also responsible for writing alert forms for any Y11 student who might require additional support post 16, with the agreement of the young person and parents and/or carers.

All Y11 students will have a careers interview on a 1:1 basis in order to identify and discuss with them their options post 16 and future career pathways.  Parents are welcome to attend if they wish.  Students will then receive an individual action plan outlining the key points of the discussion, their next steps and sources of additional information. Students who need further help can request further interviews with the Sheffield Futures team. Students in other year groups can request an interview themselves or be referred by school staff.

Adele Hetherington: Careers Leader

Adele is the school Careers Leader. Her role involves planning and delivery of the schools careers provision and working with local employers, providers, and education establishments. She has a clear overview of the schools careers provision and manages the programme so that the school meets the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks.

Helen Brown - Jobcentre Plus School Advisor

Helen is School Advisor from the Jobcentre Plus. Her work with the students is aimed at facilitating an effective transition from school to work, training or further study.

Helen offers our pupils an insight to the world of work by providing advice and support on options like routes into Traineeships and Apprenticeships, the local labour market (including ‘soft skills’ employers value, such as team working and commitment), CV writing and interview skills.

At its heart, this scheme is about supporting young people to prepare for their futures, so that they are equipped to make the most of it.

Careers in the Curriculum

The CEIAG programme is designed to meet the needs of all students.

How we work with employers

Employer encounters are a vital part of our careers programme.

The value that employers bring when they engage with schools is well evidenced. Research shows that young adults who have greater levels of contact with employers whilst at school are significantly less likely to become NEET (not in education, employment or training) and can expect, when in full-time employment, to earn up to 18% more than peers who had no such workplace encounters (Careers and Enterprise Company).

The Gatsby Benchmarks

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a framework of 8 guidelines about what makes the best careers provision in schools and colleges:

  1. A stable career programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

We have structured the schools CEIAG programme against the Gatsby Benchmarks as a commitment to develop and improve careers provision. Further details of the Gatsby Benchmarks can be found here.
